Mozart meets the actor, singer, poet and theatre director Emanuel Schikaneder, who is in Salzburg with his theatre company. Together they enjoy playing skittles and shooting with the crossbow, which was very fashionable at the time. At the end of 1780, Mozart goes to Munich to attend the performance of his Opera seria "Idomeneo, Re di Creta" (Idomeneo, King of Crete) (KV 366).

Following orders by the Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo, Mozart goes to Vienna. He gets in touch with the Weber family (who moved to Vienna in 1779) and falls in love with Aloysia's younger sister, Constanze. A final disagreement with the Archbishop leads to Mozart resigning from his position; nevertheless he remains in Vienna, despite having no fixed appointment.

On July 16, the Singspiel Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio) (KV 384) debuts to astounding acclaim. This same year he marries Constanze Weber, against his father's will. He composes his first String Quartet, which he will dedicate to Josef Haydn in 1785. Mozart fails again to secure a court appointment in Vienna.
