Mozart is appointed Konzertmeister (concertmaster) of the court chapel in Salzburg and obtains a regular pay. Mozart and his father travel for the third time to Italy, for the performance of the Opera seria "Lucio Silla" (KV135) at the Teatro Regio Ducal of Milan. They will return to Salzburg only in March 1773, delaying their return by pleading an illness of Leopold.

Even the third journey to Vienna does not achieve the hoped for appointment to the Imperial court in the Austrian capital. In autumn 1773 the Mozart family moves to Salzburg in a larger apartment, the so-called 'Tanzmeisterhaus' (Dance Master House), now at number 8-9 Makartplatz.

Wolfgang and Leopold stay in Munich, where at the beginning of 1775, the Opera "La finta giardiniera" (K196) is premiered, in the presence of the Bavarian Elector Maximilian Joseph III. Failing to achieve a court appointment, Mozart returns to Salzburg once again.

In Salzburg, Mozart writes, among others, several works of sacred music, and also the Serenade No.7 in D major "Haffner" (KV 250/248b).
